He was an Alien in the Pacific, 2009
This series of photographs is a playful investigation of an imagined first contact between Pacific and European peoples.
Borrowing from B-grade Hollywood films and drawing upon historical portraits of Captain James Cook and other later navigators, this series attempts to challenge Euro-centric narratives of colonization.
In this work, Cook, rather than the indigenous Pacific Islander is an alien (complete with green skin and antenna) in a landscape already discovered and navigated by peoples of the South Pacific.
